July Wellbeing Tip – Summer Safety

As the days get warmer, it’s important to make sure you are taking precautions to keep yourself well. When the summer heat kicks in, staying comfortable takes a little extra effort—but a few simple habits can make all the difference.

Hydrate consistently
Drink water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Limit caffeine and alcohol, which can lead to dehydration.

Cool your body
Use a damp cloth or cold pack on pulse points like your wrists or neck to cool yourself down. A cool shower or foot soak can also help lower your body temperature quickly.

Keep your space cool
Close blinds during peak heat to block sunlight. Open windows in the early morning or evening to let in cooler air. Use fans to circulate air—placing a bowl of ice or a damp towel in front can enhance the cooling effect.

Plan ahead and dress smart
Schedule strenuous activities for cooler times of day and take breaks in shaded areas. Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing made from breathable fabrics, and protect your skin with sunscreen and sun-safe accessories like hats or sunglasses.

Prevent tick bites
When spending time outdoors, especially in grassy or wooded areas, use tick insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants when possible, and check your skin, clothing and pets for ticks after being outside.

Know the signs of heat exhaustion
Watch for heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, headache or confusion. Cooling down early can help prevent more serious illness. If symptoms occur, move to a cooler, shaded area, hydrate and rest—seek medical help if symptoms worsen or don’t improve.
